John Deere emblazoned their
name on their first engines in 1923, after previously acquiring the Waterloo
Gas Engine Company in Iowa in 1918. Though continuing the Waterloo
line for some time afterward, Deere mainly built the Model E until 1946.
These engines came in 1 1/2, 3 and 6 HP sizes, all being the same design
except for their size. Most used a low tension (voltage) magneto and a
make-and-break (ignitor) ignition...only a few used a spark plug, battery
and coil. Nearly all domestic Deere engines used the Hit and Miss
governor system.
